Pontypridd's Deposition of Leigh

previous painting ........ next painting

This painting was inspired by the deposition by Pontormo painted in 1528. I was drawn to the quiet spiritual energy of his painting and needed to see if the composition itself, aside from the context was responsible for the emotional connection. I was also studying post-modernism for my thesis and was very influenced by drawing from successful historical lessons and applying them to a new contemporary situation.

The result was this painting. The figures posing in the work were and still are friends of mine and the exercise of surrounding myself with their images whilst undertaking such a large piece was a meditation in itself.
