“Balance of Planes” — Équilibre des Plans study
Balance of Planes
Original on Paper | Image: 6 x 8 inches | Framed: 18 x 22 inches
Balance of Planes marks the origin of a creative dialogue between Richard and Michelle Oliver, serving as the concept study for their larger mixed-media painting measuring 36 x 48 inches. In this intimate work on paper, geometric fields of soft ochre, sienna, and sand intersect beneath a cool grey sky, leading the eye toward a solitary building and lighthouse on the horizon. The composition speaks in the language of abstraction and architecture — a quiet equilibrium between form, space, and light.
The framing enhances this contemplative quality, featuring a handcrafted Italian distressed moulding by Roma, whose weathered finish and natural tone evoke the tactile warmth of aged wood and stone. A double archival mat creates a refined sense of depth, while museum-grade glazing ensures lasting clarity and protection.
Both serene and structured, this study reveals the collaborative sensibility that defines the Olivers’ practice — Richard’s architectural precision meeting Michelle’s intuitive sense of harmony and material balance. Balance of Planes stands as a distilled meditation on design and atmosphere, the seed from which a larger vision was born.
