Birch mountain, Eastern Sierra, California
Birch mountain, Eastern Sierra, California
36x36"
This large plein air painting captures the quiet grandeur of Birch Mountain in California’s Eastern Sierra, where light, elevation, and atmosphere come together in a constantly shifting display.
Painted on location, this piece reflects the immediacy and responsiveness required when working directly from nature. The conditions change quickly in the high Sierra, with light moving rapidly across the snow and shadow patterns constantly shifting, requiring decisions to be made with clarity and intent.
What draws me back to this range again and again is the clarity of the air and the way the forms reveal themselves in layers. The snow holds the light, while the shadowed planes carve out the structure of the mountain, creating a rhythm of cool and warm that evolves throughout the day.
There is a sense of scale here that is difficult to put into words. Standing in front of these peaks, you feel both small and completely present, aware of the vastness but also of the subtle, fleeting moments of light that define the experience.
In this painting, I’ve focused on simplifying those larger shapes and allowing the interplay of light and shadow to carry the composition. The foreground remains understated, giving way to the strength and movement of the mountain forms as they rise into the sky.
