Ragged Point, Big Sur captures the sweeping scale and rugged beauty of California’s iconic coastline, where steep cliffs descend into the Pacific and bands of surf carve rhythmic patterns along the shore below.
 
Painted with a focus on atmosphere, light, and structure, this piece reflects the experience of standing high above the coastline and watching the landscape unfold in layers of distance, texture, and movement. Along this stretch of Big Sur, the terrain feels both expansive and intimate, with dramatic cliffs giving way to quiet coves and long stretches of untouched shoreline.
 
What continues to inspire me about Ragged Point is the contrast between the solidity of the land and the constant motion of the sea. The cliffs rise with an almost sculptural presence, weathered by time and softened by coastal light, while the ocean below introduces movement and rhythm through the repeating lines of surf and tide.
 
There is a sense of openness here that feels uniquely Californian. Looking out across the coastline, the distant headlands fade gently into atmosphere, creating a feeling of endless space and calm. Even with the dramatic elevation and rugged terrain, the landscape carries a quiet stillness that invites reflection and pause.
 
In this painting, I’ve focused on simplifying the larger shapes and allowing light to unify the composition. The warm earth tones of the cliffs contrast against the cooler blues of the Pacific, while the movement of the shoreline leads the eye naturally through the scene. The foreground remains understated, giving prominence to the scale, atmosphere, and quiet grandeur of the coastline itself.
