La Sal Mountains, Moab
30 x48" Oil on Canvas. Framed in a Maple effect floater frame.
Shuntavi Butte, Kolob Canyons was painted from an evening session in southern Utah, when the lowering sun set the red rock formations aglow against the cooler shadows of the canyon. I was drawn to the contrast between the illuminated cliffs, the broad sweep of the valley, and the expansive sky as the light shifted from warm gold to violet and blue. Through energetic brushwork and layered color, I wanted to hold onto the sense of depth, stillness, and changing light that made the scene so memorable.
